The tour will cover the most important historical sites of the island’s capital: the characteristic Darajani market, opened in 1905; the Anglican church built in 1874 in the square where the slave market took place; the House of Wonders, built by Sultan Barghash in 1883; the old Portuguese fort from the 1700s; the house of Freddie Mercury, born in 1946 in Zanzibar; the narrow streets of the old city, where you can admire different architectural styles (Indian balconies, intricately carved wooden doorways, old cafes). Along Gizenga Street, there will be time for shopping.
Stone Town in Zanzibar, the city of stone, is the guardian of the island’s past. This ancient urban center represents the historical heart of Zanzibar and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich collection of stone buildings.
The intricate alleyways and narrow lanes, the finely decorated doorways, the bazaars infused with the scents of spices, the mosques adjacent to Christian churches – all this epitomizes Stone Town in Zanzibar, also known as Mji Mkongwe (“old town” in Swahili). Despite being situated in Tanzania, the evidence of cultures that have left their mark on this island is so abundant that we could easily feel transported to an oriental city or a European ethnic neighborhood.
This is the old town of the capital of Zanzibar, known as the “city of stone” for the buildings constructed in the 19th century reflecting influences from various architectural styles from around the world. This uniqueness led to Stone Town being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
